Miss Pearl and her Monkey Friend

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a single mother of two who teaches part time.  My youngest is 2 years old so being home for her (Miss Pearl) I have been able to give over some time to being crafty, much to the detriment of my house cleaning.. . . I participate in the Queenscliff Arts and Crafts artisan market and sell my baskets in a local Queenscliff shop as well as through friends.

Where do you get your inspiration and what is your creative process?

I love fabric and all things textile, being able to make a beautiful piece of material either bought or found into something useful and fun is a real joy.  Making a gift for a friend will often inspire me in a certain direction as I try to design a piece that suites their personality.   I like to combine different mediums, at the moment I really enjoy origami so have just been playing around with material and origami folds which is fun.  Growing up my mother was a big 'op shopper' and always sewing so there was constantly material around the house.  She often helped me sew and always made us great dress-ups.  Craft was a big part of our life so now I am settled down with my children it just seems the natural thing to do.  I have been collecting material, patterns and ideas for the last 15 years, moving my growing material stash from house to house.  It was getting so big I made a promise to myself that I had to start using it or else!  The good thing is that if I have an idea a always have the bits and pieces handy to give it a go.

What is next for Miss Pearl and her Cheeky Monkey?

Well, time is always tricky, I have started a blogspot but still have a lot to do on it, I need to be more disciplined and spend more time on it, it is a work in progress!  Being involved in QUARC and the market is fun, I will be giving some sewing classes at ME foodstore soon and a girlfriend and I conduct kids after school art classes.  There are  lots of ideas swimming around and I enjoy up-cycling material for kids clothing and homewares.  I have just this week put some items on the Made It site and need to spend some time developing the internet business side of things.
